Over the years we’ve taken on a diverse range of branding and creative projects, designing for a wide variety of clients across a multitude of different commercial sectors. Recently Urban Giants Design were approached by newly formed Grimlord Games, with a request for a logo design and branding for not only the company but also for their debut adventure board game, Endure the Stars.
We knew just from the initial enquiry that this was an exciting project to be involved with, so we were definitely flattered and keen to start creating.
Initially we began with the design of the brand identity for Grimlord Games, creating a logo which had a visual puzzle theme to it to reflect the gaming nature of the business, with a bit of a gritty/edgy feel in response to their prefered genre of game. The brand device symbol combined the G and L from the key sounds of the name, with a maze structure which leads you around and back to the beginning to symbolise the addictive replay quality of the games. The logo is monochrome, with reversed variations for flexibility of application.
The next stage was to fully understand the game scenario and storyline, which we then needed to visually capture in the brand identity, box artwork, character dashboards, various specialist card decks, activity tokens and advertising. Once we were comfortable we fully understood the game we began by designing the logo for Endure the Stars to encapsulate the style and feel of the game to assist with strategic teaser marketing campaigns.
The brief for the brand identity was ‘digital glitch’, so we developed a typographic identity with each character individually distorted and glitched. We then created a displaced feel to the overall type to establish a digital monitor glitch feel, which was enhanced with some inteference overlayed. The logo was then placed onto a dark industrial background with a grungy feel to contrast the digital elements with the industrial built environment of the dark dystopian spaceship.
Once the brand identity was finalised we began to establish a graphic style for the remaining elements of the game, tranlsating the brand style and concept throughout. Amazing character illustrations for the game were provided by concept artist Brian Coughlan (Bri in the Sky).
Our brief was to design a full range of artwork for the table top adventure board game, which included in-game card decks for weapons, armour, helmets, equipment, character mood and events. These then linked into the character dashboards which profile each characters health, damage and specialist abilities. All of these elements followed the dystopian digital feel of the brand and complimented the illustration style of the characters.
The character dashboards and specialist card decks formed a large part of the game content, but there were still a lot more artwork to produce. Following on from these we developed the design style through to game tokens for placement onto the character dashboards and the board tiles, these included exits, damage indicators, GEP radar feedback, stun blasts and warnings.
Based on illustrated conceptual scenes provided by Brian, we then developed the artwork for the game box packaging, encapsulating the concept of the adventure board game within.
Endure the Stars was launched as a Kickstarter project, seeking crowd funding to translate the game through to manufacture and production. As such we designed a wide range of promotional graphics for the Kickstarter page including presenting of standard content, stretch goals, 3D figures and concept art. In addition to this we designed artwork for advertising across other digital platforms and website takeovers.
Grimlord Games reached their funding target on Kickstarter for Endure the Stars within a staggering 48hrs of it going live, and pushed on to obtain almost £86,000 above their original £45,000 target. An amazing achievement and something Urban Giants were proud to be a part of.
The Sci-Fi adventure board game will be going into production in a few months, ready for distribution later this year, so watch this space.
