Urban Giants

Grimlord Games & ‘Endure the Stars’ adventure board game

Over the years we’ve taken on a diverse range of branding and creative projects, designing for a wide variety of clients across a multitude of different commercial sectors. Recently Urban Giants Design were approached by newly formed Grimlord Games, with a request for a logo design and branding for not only the company but also for their debut adventure board game, Endure the Stars.

We knew just from the initial enquiry that this was an exciting project to be involved with, so we were definitely flattered and keen to start creating.

Initially we began with the design of the brand identity for Grimlord Games, creating a logo which had a visual puzzle theme to it to reflect the gaming nature of the business, with a bit of a gritty/edgy feel in response to their prefered genre of game. The brand device symbol combined the G and L from the key sounds of the name, with a maze structure which leads you around and back to the beginning to symbolise the addictive replay quality of the games. The logo is monochrome, with reversed variations for flexibility of application.

Grimlord Games Logo Design
The next stage was to fully understand the game scenario and storyline, which we then needed to visually capture in the brand identity, box artwork, character dashboards, various specialist card decks, activity tokens and advertising. Once we were comfortable we fully understood the game we began by designing the logo for Endure the Stars to encapsulate the style and feel of the game to assist with strategic teaser marketing campaigns.

The brief for the brand identity was ‘digital glitch’, so we developed a typographic identity with each character individually distorted and glitched. We then created a displaced feel to the overall type to establish a digital monitor glitch feel, which was enhanced with some inteference overlayed. The logo was then placed onto a dark industrial background with a grungy feel to contrast the digital elements with the industrial built environment of the dark dystopian spaceship.

Endure The Stars - Logo Design

Once the brand identity was finalised we began to establish a graphic style for the remaining elements of the game, tranlsating the brand style and concept throughout. Amazing character illustrations for the game were provided by concept artist Brian Coughlan (Bri in the Sky).

Our brief was to design a full range of artwork for the table top adventure board game, which included in-game card decks for weapons, armour, helmets, equipment, character mood and events. These then linked into the character dashboards which profile each characters health, damage and specialist abilities. All of these elements followed the dystopian digital feel of the brand and complimented the illustration style of the characters.

The character dashboards and specialist card decks formed a large part of the game content, but there were still a lot more artwork to produce. Following on from these we developed the design style through to game tokens for placement onto the character dashboards and the board tiles, these included exits, damage indicators, GEP radar feedback, stun blasts and warnings.
tokensBased on illustrated conceptual scenes provided by Brian, we then developed the artwork for the game box packaging, encapsulating the concept of the adventure board game within.

Endure the Stars was launched as a Kickstarter project, seeking crowd funding to translate the game through to manufacture and production. As such we designed a wide range of promotional graphics for the Kickstarter page including presenting of standard content, stretch goals, 3D figures and concept art. In addition to this we designed artwork for advertising across other digital platforms and website takeovers.

An amazing achievement and something Urban Giants were proud to be a part of.

The Sci-Fi adventure board game will be going into production in a few months, ready for distribution later this year, so watch this space.

New face of Urban Giants Design

We thought it was about time to make a few changes to Urban Giants Design, so we’ve started 2015 with a visual bang!

Companies evolve and change over the years, based on experience gained, new markets or avenues ventured, hindsight, cultural influences, fresh thinking or a new approach. It’s important for your brand to reflect those changes and evolve with your business to ensure you don’t leave your image and visual communications standing in your shadow.

At Urban Giants Design, we’re no different, in fact we really have to lead by example. As such, after years of trading with the same corporate identity we first launched with, we felt it was the right time to change. Our brand values are the same as they’ve always been, to deliver high quality brands and brand strategies to help businesses become giants, but we just see things a little differently now.

We have therefore designed and developed a new brand identity, which visually communicates what we do and who we do it for.

UrbanGiantsDesign

The brand identity is disciplined and organised, whilst being creative, free, quirky, fun and spontaneous, maintaining a professional feel. There’s a contrast between the heavy industrial/urban feel with the opening type, which hides a creative element with the negative space fine liner drawing a controlled line. The playful and more free font of ‘giants’ acts as a creative contrast, combining well with the controlled element above. For us, design is all about communication, which is why we’ve finished the logo design off with a quirky symbol of speech and discussion.

We have then translated the branding through to our new website, social media and printed marketing materials, ensuring brand consistency throughout.

We’ve event got a new design studio to inspire us, full of natural materials, typography, design classics and creative inspiration.

Future Forum Branding & Logo Design

Urban Giants Design were selected by north east regional development agency Business & Enterprise Group (BE Group), to design and develop a brand identity for a new business event initiative entitle Future Forum, to discuss the future of business growth and development within the Leeds area.

The brand identity was required to reflect a professional, business focussed, positive and efficiently organised feel, whilst ensuring a generic presence which would be suitably representative of all business types across a full range of commercial operating sectors.

Urban Giants Design created a new logo design and supporting branding to reflect those values outlined, with the use of clean typography, disciplined layout, clean modern colour range and efficient feel.

Future Forum Brand Indentity / Logo Design Future Forum Brand Style Future Forum Exhibition Stand Design Future Forum Outdoor Advertising Design Future Forum Leaflet Design

The brand identity itself uses a combination of the two ‘F’ characters from the brand name, with the second ‘F’ reversed and made up of two chevron symbols positively travelling in an upward direction. Forums, by their very nature, are design to talk and communicate ideas between one another to reach and project positive, progressional outcomes, which is symbolic of the two’F’ characters facing and communicating, along with the arrow element.

The branding has then been translated through to a full range of promotional event materials, from signage, posters, advertising, outdoor advertising and flyers, through to event programmes and digital marketing.

Nepacs Rebranding

Urban Giants Design were recently selected by North East prisoner support specialist organisation, Nepacs, to help them to design a develop a new brand identity.

Nepacs, like many other organisations, have grown and developed over time. As a result they wanted to reflect their new position and support offering to prisoners and their families throughout the North East region, with the introduction of a new logo design and branding.

The organisation offer unique support to both prisoners and the families they leave behind, with support ranging from dealing with prison visits, supporting children through the resulting trauma of events, counselling and support networks, through to financial support.

Essentially a lot of elements combine to provide a complete support network to help people to accept, cope, reflect, rehabilitate and reinvent themselves if they so wish.

Nepacs also play a key role in collaboration with other private and government support organisations, legal agencies and other related contracts. As such they need to establish themselves within a competitive market place as a key player, and a professional organisation to ensure the acquisition of key contracts.

In response to the brief, Urban Giants Design have created an identity and brand image which visually explores and communicates the concept of a multifaceted or support organisations, which amalgamates a multitude of skills and support offerings to facilitate new beginnings and a positive future for many. The design uses a modern serif typeface, implemented to communicate trust and heritage, whilst maintaining a current view point and modern approach.

The geometric fragmented pattern which either fills the type, or acts as a background for the type to knock out of in stark white, communicates the collaborative approach and multiple elements of support and delivery.

The brand identity is to be rolled out across all print and digital based applications over the coming months as part of a staged rebrand process, covering corporate stationery, promotional marketing materials, digital communications and signage etc. Urban Giants Design will be aiding and facilitating this process at key points.

N2 Logo Design

Urban Giants Design were recently approached by data capture specialists N2 Limited, to design and develop a new logo identity, following a referral from another client.

As with any branding project we undertake, it was important for us to profile N2 as a business, in order to fully understand their commercial offering, to whom they provide products or services for, and exactly how all of that works.

We designed a new brand identity to clearly communicate the core offering of the business; the capturing and processing of data to facilitate the business of others, through a range of devices, delivered across a multitude of commercial operating sectors.

The brand device was designed using a single typographic form to express both the ‘N’ & ‘2’ characters, consistently maintaining the same physical space, with the ‘2’ character being rotated by 90 degrees clockwise. Adjoining the two characters is a negative space cutout of a wifi or scan wave symbol, which visually binds the two elements together. The two type characters are also represented in different colours.

N2 Ltd - Logo Identity Design

N2 Ltd – Logo Identity Design

All of these graphic elements culminate to visually communicate the process behind N2’s core commercial offering. Essentially they digitally scan and capture raw data from a wide array of sources, which is analysed, interpreted and translated through to an alternative device or source via digital transmission into a format the end user or client would prefer to receive it in. So the original data, ‘n’, is captured by the wave, then rotated and changed colour into the ‘2’ for final transmission to the end user via the binding wave again.

This visual communication is then reiterated and confirmed via a sub-synced strapline, ‘The new wave in data capture’.

The logo has deliberately and very consciously been designed to appear very efficient, clean, organised, well engineered and professional, mimicking the service offered, whilst anticipating the wide range of intended physical applications from corporate stationery and website, through to branded equipment, vehicle livery and uniforms.

As with any brand identity we create, the logo is designed to be flexible within it’s own corporate colour range with complete consistency, allowing for flexible use across a multitude of different products and marketing collateral

Branding – The Scone Bar, Richmond

Urban Giants Design were recently approached by a newly launched North Yorkshire based specialist Cafe & Bistro to design and develop a brand identity with supporting marketing and trading material.

The Scone Bar has opened its doors to the public this month within the beautiful North Yorkshire market town of Richmond, serving a range of specialist scones, in addition to sandwiches, snacks and hampers etc.

We have been approached to design and develop a brand identity to capture the ethos of The Scone Bar. Our brief is to design a brand which communicates a modern cafe born out of Edwardian traditions, underpinned by freshly prepared home-baked delicious food.

Initially we have designed a logo identity for The Scone Bar, which encapsulates the values outlined above, via a hand illustrated brand device with the font selection bringing together Edwardian heritage with a modern twist. As always we have designed the brand to be flexible within the corporate colour family selected, allowing it to work on both cream and purple backgrounds.

The rich colour set selected provides a feeling of quality and class, almost regal.
The logo and branding is now being translated through to a range of materials, including Menus, advertising, signage, packaging, promotional flyers, stickers, stationery, loyalty cards and a content managed website.

New brand identity in the spotlight

Urban Giants Design specialise in developing brands which really capture and communicate the essence of your business, product or service.

We were recently approached by a new business startup based in Durham City, Durham Scenic Workshops, the owner of which has years of experience in designing and building stage sets for theatre, television & film, in addition to sourcing props and facilitating lighting solutions.

Urban Giants were commissioned to design a logo and branded corporate material for Durham Scenic Workshops which communicated clearly the service they provide, whilst retaining a clean and professional feel.

Durham Scenic Workshops – Logo Design Variations

The brand identity has been designed to reflect the core service of stage set design and build, with the ‘D’ illustrated to appear as though it has been built using stage design principles. It uses a propped board with a thinner hanging sheet in front of it, hanging by wires. So from an audience members point of view it will merely appear as a large ‘D’ character, but we have a side angle view demonstrating the construction “secret” which makes this work and happen.

The logo has been designed to work on the range of colour backgrounds within the corporate colour set outlined, providing ultimate flexibility for application across a multitude of marketing material.

The brand style and identity was then translated through to corporate stationery, inclusive of letterhead and business cards designs.

The new brand will soon be launched and is set to take centre stage within the region as a specialist.

Social Media Website Designed for the Armed Forces

At Urban Giants Design we have a multitude of clients across a diverse range of commercial sectors, so every project is different to the next. Recently we were approached to design and develop a social media website dedicated to the Armed Forces.

The website is intended to provide a social platform to both serving and ex-serving armed forces personnel, establishing a dedicated area to discuss those things you may not wish to divulge on an open civvies platform such as Facebook, and engage with others who really understand. It also allows members to get to know other regiments and discover information from other specialist areas etc.

The new social media platform was commissioned by an ex-serving member of the armed forces, so it’s built from a members point of view by someone who knows.

Initially we developed a brand identity which is suggestive of conversations out in the field, as such ‘Pull Up A Sandbag‘ became the name of the social media site. A logo was designed to look open and inviting to join a discussion with an armed forces feel, through illustration style, colour palette and textured typography. The use of blue and green in the brand is to represent Army, Navy & Airforce colours.

The website has been designed with similar features to other commonly used social platforms to which many of us have grown accustomed to, such as a Timeline Profile Page to share status updates, post news and engage in conversation with followers & friends. The site also allows for the creation of Groups and Events, along with Photo Galleries for users, Image Tagging, Friend Requests, Comments and Geo-tagging Locations.

Pullupasandbag.com – Member Timeline Profile Page

The site is free to use, but does require you to securely register in order to access content beyond the welcome page in order to protect it’s members content.

Each member is encouraged to enter their regiment details and service record, which then allows other members to search for users by regiment etc, in addition to the persons name, making it unique to the Armed Forces.

The website has just recently launched and is already attracting a multitude of members and looks set to be a massive success for the Armed Forces Network.

New brand developed for City Web Consulting

Urban Giants Design are currently in the process of designing and developing a new brand identity for website development company City Web Consulting.

Urban Giants were approached as branding and design specialists to create a new logo identity, brand styling and a website design by Drupal programming and development company City Web Consulting.

At present we are in the middle of the project, establishing the brand identity itself, which we’ll translate through to the website design in coming days. We thought we’d give you a sneak preview of the logo design as it’s rather nice.

Our brief was to create something modern, fresh, professional, organised and creative, to reflect the companies ethos and service offering.

City Web Consulting - Brand Identity

City Web Consulting – Brand Identity

We Developed the logo incorporating the initials from the company name, with the two ‘C’ characters combining to create the ‘W’. It also resembles a fresh creative brush like doodle to show the design side. The typeface selection continues the fresh, clean, modern feel, with simple and approachable lines and form. With the colour fragments inside of the brand device signifying the various coding components and programming modules which, when brought together, make up a complete digital system.

City Web Consulting Logo

City Web Consulting Logo

As with any branding project we design and develop, the identity has been designed to be flexible within it’s own brand colours, operating on both white and grey backgrounds. This allows the brand to be applied more creatively to alter impact, diversify it’s communication and delivery impact across both digital and print based marketing literature.

We are now looking forward to translating this brand identity and logo design through to their company website, which City Web will be coding themselves. So, keep your eyes peeled for this over the coming days, we’ll no doubt give you a sneak peek of this also.

NDI Cyber Security Event Branding

Urban Giants Design were recently approached by Defence, Space, Aerospace and Security based organisation NDI to produce branding and marketing material for their Cyber Security Event in Scotland.

This years event is to be held at the RBS Headquarters in Scotland, and is sponsored by market leaders Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International, Selex ES, RBS, CGI and Dark Trace. A range of high quality speakers are also attending the event to provide vital knowledge and support to attendees.

Urban Giants were commissioned to design and develop a brand look and feel for the event, which we then translated across a multitude of print and digital based marketing material. As part of our professional creative support for the event we produced event brochures, press advertising, digital banners, event signage, event banners and email marketing templates.

The design was developed to visually communicate the event focus, cyber security and issues surrounding this. We therefore focussed on a digital corruption feel to the overall design, one of interference.
