Urban Giants Design are passionate about supporting the creative and personal education of young people, as we feel it’s important to use our professional experience and time to give something back and encourage others. As such we’ve been involved with Dragon’s Den style events with Redcar & Cleveland College, we’ve been part of the creative team of Hartlepool College of FE for a number of years to help develop their creative provision and inspire design students from A Level through to Foundation Degree, in addition to running creative development workshops and seminars around the region.
Recently we’ve decided to support a young and ambitious girl on a quest around the world. Madeleine Barrett, aged 14 from Chester-le-Street, is soon to embark on a trip to Ecuador and Galapagos Islands as part of a World Challenge Expedition. World Challenge provides educational expeditions in the developing world which aim to teach life skills and expand minds outside of the classroom, inspiring leadership skills and fostering team spirit.
In addition to the personal development skills obtained as part of the expedition experience, the young explorers engage in vital conservation and community support activities designed to preserve one of the most beautiful locations on earth. Teams participate in a number of different projects mostly based in communities and schools where they can help to repaint buildings and carry out basic construction tasks. There are also an abundance of potential conservation projects, often linked to the preservation of the cloud forest and to promoting sustainable agriculture. There is also the possibility that teams may be able to work with the children of the Galápagos Islands teaching them about environmental awareness, and possibly complete conservation work within the Galápagos National Park.
Each of the young explorers are required to raise their own funds in order to embark on the expedition, Madeleine included, with a funding requirement of £4755, from which they will obtain a recognised qualification and learn vital business and communication skills.
Madeleine will be part of a 4 week World Challenge expedition in the summer of 2014. During the 4 weeks she will be completing 6 phases of the expedition: Acclimatisation, Main Trek, Volcano, Project, Rainforest, Galapagos. Acclimatization will involve adapting to the new culture which will include a small trek. The Main Trek will be a 5 day hike up one of the Andes Mountains. After that she will commence her ascent on Cotopaxi – a volcano located within the Andes. The Project could be either a conservation project or a human project, involving working to improve the surroundings in Ecuador, followed by a trek through the Amazon Rainforest.
Urban Giants Design have provided a donation to Madeleine toward her expedition, and we wish her the best of luck with raising the remaining funds required to embark on her expedition.
